Uninsured Motorist Insurance: Why it’s so Important

Uninsured motorists are a danger for all drivers on the road. Nearly one in seven drivers across the United States are uninsured, and according to the Insurance Research Council (IRC), approximately 23 percent of Florida drivers are uninsured!

There are many kinds of optional automobile insurance coverage, and uninsured motorist (UM) insurance is one of the most important, particularly for Florida residents. Although insurance companies are legally required to offer UM coverage, it is not mandatory in the State of Florida. You might think the expense is not justified, but if you are without UM insurance coverage, being involved in a traffic incident – even if you are not at fault! – can be an extremely expensive proposition.

Under normal circumstances, the at-fault driver’s insurance will cover the costs incurred in a traffic incident, up to the policy limits. If the at-fault driver has no insurance, however, then the responsibility is squarely on your insurance company to cover your expenses. Having UM insurance provides another important layer of protection for you and your passengers, compensating for lost wages, medical bills, and any other expenses incurred as a result of an incident caused by an uninsured motorist.

UM coverage is not only one of the more important forms of optional coverage, it is also one of the least expensive! It is recommended by nearly every insurance company and responsible attorney in the State of Florida, for good reason. Even if the other driver has auto insurance, if they have only the bare minimum required to drive legally, their policy limits may not cover the full expenses of the damage they cause. In such a case, UM coverage would again serve as a buffer once their insurance had been exhausted, covering you and your passengers’ lost wages, medical bills, and other expenses. In the case of hit-and-run drivers, UM coverage also functions exactly as though the offender was an uninsured motorist.

Uninsured motorist coverage is an inexpensive but extremely effective safety net. Although not mandatory for Florida drivers, it should be your utmost priority when purchasing insurance.
